Parrot is a leading drone company that is elevating industry standards through innovation and design. Specializing in top-tier robotics and technology for inspection, first responders, public safety, security agencies, and surveying professionals, Parrot was the first manufacturer in the industry to introduce a 4G UAV—the Parrot ANAFI Ai.
The Parrot ANAFI Ai is the first in its class. Inspired by nature, the ANAFI Ai is a game changer with its 48 MP camera, advanced robotic platform, and unique design. With its 4G capability, it does what no other drone can–connect to the internet for a faster, smoother connection that extends beyond the cloud.
Parrot embraced organic silhouettes when developing the Parrot ANAFI Ai—the drone has a similar body to that of a praying mantis, which Parrot has illustrated throughout product announcements and demonstration videos across its channels. The drone has a unique camera system that differs from traditional drone designs. Apart from the main 48 MP camera, it has two stereoscopic cameras on either side of the main camera. The stereoscopic cameras compare to binocular vision, which creates an optical illusion with images captured from slightly different angles. This helps the camera sensors create depth for increased perception and flight accuracy. Mounted on a mechanical gimbal, the cameras can rotate in the direction of flight, acting like a mobile head that can be oriented just like the eyes of various animals. What’s impressive about the ANAFI Ai is that the camera setup gives the drone a 100° horizontal FOV, and a 311° vertical FOV—this mimics visual perception through the mobility across 5 free axes (the movements of the head and eyes in their orbits), which ultimately supports 360° obstacle detection. According to Parrot, this system can also be used in photogrammetry mode, which allows the drone to leverage its AI system for mapping, while the main camera records imagery.

Basing the design on this concept, Parrot developed the ANAFI Ai’s obstacle avoidance system. The idea behind the design is based on the evolution of the optic nerve. As stated by Parrot, “For most species, the optic nerve is the largest of its kind; it transmits large amounts of information across the body to its cerebral support.” Because the sensors, which resemble large eyes, can tilt and move across various axes, the drone can recognize and process where it is located in three-dimensional space, as well as identify potential obstructions. Similarly to prey and flying animals, the drone has placement of its head located in such a way that the sensors have an excellent field of view, allowing it to identify objects located in its rear.
It’s not just the camera and the drone chassis that were developed to mimic organic shapes—the ANAFI Ai’s propellers also resemble blue whale fins, which help the animal break against currents. The idea behind this concept is that the unique shape (which also looks like whirligigs, the samara seeds of maple trees), help the drone fly more efficiently by cutting through wind resistance, enhancing the drone’s overall aerodynamics.
Aside from its intriguing design and durability, the ANAFI Ai can help enterprise customers achieve field range versatility and faster data transfer through its 4G connectivity capabilities. Once set up with a phone that has a 4G compatible SIM card, the drone can use the connection to have an unlimited flight range.
If your organization needs a sophisticated drone that can capture professional-grade imagery for mapping, inspection, and more, the Parrot ANAFI Ai is worth looking into.
